Homework & Study Guidelines

Role of Parents: Parents are the main educators of your child. The Maktab is here to support and enhance this role. We run for a few hours a week during Maktab term, and in this time, children normally have three lessons where they study Quran, Arabic, and Islamic Studies. This time is barely enough to introduce the students to the topic being taught. We will, Insha’Allah, do our best, but we will not be able to do this without your help. We sincerely hope that you will not only match but exceed our efforts to educate our young Muslims.

Ways Parents Can Support

  • Daily Schedule: Set a daily schedule including play, study, homework, prayers, etc., and
  • ensure homework is completed.
  • Praying Together: Pray together (Jamaat) at home if not at the Masjid.
  • Quran Practice: Set aside at least 10 minutes every day to practice the Quran
  • (recitation and/or memorisation).
  • Awareness of Maktab Curriculum: Be aware of what is taught at the Maktab and help
  • with homework or projects.

Homework Policy

  • If a student is seen to be not completing homework without a reasonable explanation, the student may be kept in during recess to complete it.
  • If it is seen to be a persistent problem, a note/email will be sent to parents to inform them of the issue and eventually, parents may be invited to meet with the teacher to discuss and help resolve any issues regarding homework.
  • There will be regular homework to practice the Quran/Arabic learnt in class (minimum of 10 minutes each day) and Islamic Studies. Occasionally, students will have a project beyond this.

Students’ Responsibilities

  • Attend classes regularly and arrive prepared.
  • Adhere to class rules and refrain from phone/tablet use during class time.

Parents’ Responsibilities

  • Attend parent sessions each term and communicate any concerns to administration.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies and promptly report any changes in contact
  • information or medical conditions.
  • Manage child’s medical needs during class hours.

Dress Code

In Islam, clothing serves three purposes: to cover the `Awrah (private parts) of the body, provide protection, and adornment. Allah, the Almighty, describes the dress of believers as “The Dress of Piety” or Libasut-Taqwa, emphasizing modesty and righteousness (Al-A’raf 7:26). Students are expected to adhere to the following dress guidelines:

  • Everyone: Clothes should be loose-fitting, not see-through, and devoid of offensive logos or writing. Tops should be long enough to cover the midriff or back adequately.
  • Boys: Shorts should cover the knees when sitting, and shirts should be sleeved.
  • Girls: Scarves or hijabs should cover the hair, tops should be modest and full or three-quarter-sleeved, and skirts or pants should be full-length (up to ankles).

Fees & Books

  • Fees payable by a family are as follows: $180 per term per student. Since we already missed some weeks, the fee will be $150 for this first term)
  • Tuition fees are payable by term, with each term consisting of 3 months.
  • Fees must be settled by the 5th day of the term to avoid enrolment cancellation.
  • No fee adjustments will be made for late arrivals.
  • Textbooks and workbooks that are to be used during the year need to be bought for each student. Efforts will be made to keep prices as low as possible.

We appreciate your support and cooperation in helping us provide a comprehensive and effective education for our students. If students, parents, or guardians have any concerns, please contact the appropriate class teacher or UMMA team members and volunteers.
